Criminal law

Picture
Criminal Law involves a prosecution by the Director of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the State of a person, the Defendant for an act that has been classified as a crime.

There are a number of ways in which criminal offences can be prosecuted under Irish law depending on the type of offence a person is charged with and the directions of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

•    In the District Court before Judge without a Jury;
•    In the higher courts such the Circuit Criminal Court, Central Criminal Court before a judge and jury;
•    In the Special Criminal Court before three Judges and no jury. This is only in very defined cases.

There are a number of offences that can only be prosecuted in the District Court or in the higher Courts.
